West League Update - West 2 - 17th May 2018

It was a massive weekend for West Region Rugby with two of the three championship titles up for grabs.

In West 2, Strathendrick could claim the title at Loch Lomond with a win, though anything less and it would probably go to the last set of games of the season.

It was a gorgeous afternoon at Dillichip, and despite the midweek rain that led to the postponement of Wednesday nights game between Lomond and Millbrae, the pitch was in pretty good nick, though there were still a few soft patches.

West League Update - West 1 - 15th May 2018

It was a massive weekend for West Region Rugby with two of the three Championship titles up for grabs.

In West 1, it could all be settled by the Sunday when Carrick travelled to Allan Glens, but by the same token, a Glens win would take it to the final weekend of the season.

Third place Garnock had a derby game on Saturday, with a short trip to Irvine. A midweek bonus point win at Kilmarnock meant that Garnock needed a further bonus point win in this their final league match of the season if they had any chance of taking the title from Carrick grasp.

Scottish Rugby announce Law Variations Trials for Mini & Youth Rugby

For season 2018/19, Scottish Rugby are to trial a set of law variations for mini and youth rugby.

The trial will form the basis of research into different playing formats which will help to provide building blocks to the 15-a-side game, kicking-off with festivals and triangular fixtures before progressing to knockouts, tournaments and leagues.

Clubs have often noted that one of the issues with player retention is the big jumps between the requirements in different age groups, with challenges noted in moving from mini to youth level (especially regarding pitch size), and then moving up to Under 16 and then Under 18.

West Results (Male) - 12th May 2018

Each of the contenders in the West 1 and West 2 Championship contests are playing this weekend, whilst there's also crucial matches in the fight to avoid relegation, so plenty of action to look forward to.

West Results (Male) - 9th May 2018

We have a few games in West Region tonight, each of which has an impact in the Championship and relegation battles in West 1 and West 2.

1) Waterlogged pitch

The bonus point win for Garnock moves them to within 4 points of Carrick, whilst Cambuslangs bonus point win is surely enough for them to maintain their West 1 status.

In West 2, Strathendrick stretch their lead at the top following their big win against Birkmyre, whilst the vagaries of the Scottish weather means Loch Lomond v Millbrae is off due to a waterlogged pitch.

West League Update - West 2 - 8th May 2018

As the only one of the three title contenders to play at the weekend, Strathendrick moved into top slot following their 33 nil victory away at Birkmyre.  The result puts Endrick 3 points ahead of Lenzie, who have no games remaining so are now watching with the rest of the spectators.  Endrick have three games to play, the first of which is Wednesday evening - Birkmyre again.

West League Update - West 1 - 8th May 2018

Carrick continue their march toward the West 1 Championship title with a 62-25 win away at Greenock.  Their challengers, Glens and Garnock, also had wins - a comfortable 82 nil for Glens against Helensburgh, whilst it was much closer for Garnock at East Kilbride, where a last minute try gave Garnock a 25-17 win.

The results leave Glens still 2 points behind Carrick, whilst Garnock (who didn’t pick up a four try bonus) are 9 behind.  Glens have one game remaining, but Carrick and Garnock have two.

West League Update - West 3 - 1st May 2018

Prior to getting down to league business, we must commiserate with Wigtownshire who lost out 12-3 to Ross Sutherland in what was close fought contest in the final of the National BT Bowl at Murrayfield.

Wigtownshire have already been confirmed as West 3 Champions, but the second promotion spot was still up for grabs going into the weekend.

West League Update - West 2 - 1st May 2018

We have three Saturdays of the season left, and only now has the West 2 title race been whittled down to three Clubs.

Lenzie finished their season with a bonus point win away at Strathaven which means they end up on 78 points. Cumnock also had a bonus point win, and they too are on 78 points but have two games left to play.  Whilst in the game of the day, Strathendrick came out on top at home against Paisley, but with neither gaining a bonus point.

West League Update - West 1 - 1st May 2018

First up, congratulations to Carrick for winning the BT National Shield with their 39-19 victory over Hawick Harlequins. This is the third year running Carrick have lifted the trophy - quite an impressive feat.

With Carrick on duty at Murrayfield, both Glens and Ganock took their chance to close the gap on the leaders.  Keeping up to date via Twitter, the Glens game at East Kilbride looks to have been a bit of an end-to-end ding dong battle, with EK obviously fixing their issue from the previous week by taking their chances.  EK led 17-14 at half time, building a larger gap during the 2nd half before Glens got back into things and snatching a last minute try for a 39-34 victory.
