West League Update - West 1 - 16 April 2018

Bonus point wins all round for the West 1 title contender at the weekend, so the only real change at the top is they each have one game less with which to catch Carrick in their chase for the title and the sole promotion spot.

Each Club has four games left (Garnock have five), and with Carrick seven points ahead of Allan Glens, 13 ahead of Garnock and 18 ahead of East Kilbride, it's Carrick who are current favourites.  In addition, Carrick also have a substantially stronger points difference over their challengers.

So whilst there’s not that many games left, and Carrick look to be clear, it certainly isn't not over yet.

This weekend Carrick visit East Kilbride for what is probably West leagues game of the day.   A win for Carrick, and it's a big hurdle out of the way.  A win for East Kilbride, and the title challenge takes on a new look, as Carrick have still to visit Greenock and Glens, with a final home game against Annan.

An East Kilbride win would put a great deal of emphasis on the Glens v Carrick game on 12th May, but it’s not that simple as both Glens and Garnock have still to visit East Kilbride.

Whilst we had no change at the top of the table, there was a significant result at the foot with Irvine gaining a bonus point win over Oban Lorne.

The win moves Irvine ahead of Cambuslang (who were on the wrong end of 76 nil results at Garnock), and puts them 10 points ahead of Oban, though Oban do have two games in hand.  Oban are eight behind Cambuslang, but with two games in hand.

This weekend, Oban are away at Garnock, whilst Irvine travel to Helensburgh.  It’ll be difficult for Oban to get anything at Garnock, whilst a win for Irvine at Ardencaple would probably be enough for them to be clear of the 2nd relegation spot.  However, Irvines remaining games are Stewartry, Garnock and East Kilbride, so there may not be too many more points on offer.

Cambuslangs four remaining games include Helensburgh, Annan (home and away) and Oban away.

Oban have six games remaining, but only five Saturdays in which to play them, and they all look tough.

The fight for this second relegation spot is tight.  Wins are going to be hard to come by, so bonus points are going to be crucial.

We wonder if the Championship Committee could shuffle things around to set up a final day play-off between Oban and Cambuslang at Glencruiten?
