West League Update - West 3 - 18th March 2018

Just two games played in West 3 at the weekend, with top team Wigtownshire winning 69-8 at home against Lochaber, and Glasgow Uni Medics also winning at home, 51-17 against Isle of Mull.

Wigtownshire now sit on 55 points and the Medics on 47, with Bishopton in third on 39.  The Medics will be due a points deduction having failed to field a team against Bishopton last weekend, so with two games in hand, Bishopton look to be the main contenders with Wigtownshire for the title.

Bishopton host Shawlands this weekend, and will be looking for a bonus point win to close the gap on Shire.  Shire have a tougher ask with an away trip to Mull.

Checking back the results, it looks like it was 14th October the last time Mull had a home league game.  Double checking the remaining fixtures, and indeed, of their remaining 7 games, their next six are all at home, including each of the three title challengers.

Mull might be at the bottom end of the table, but we’d bet at least one of the top three don’t pick up full points on that journey.

The Medics have a free weekend.

Wigtownshire are in the driving seat for the West 3 title, but with Mull away as well as both Bishopton and the Medics still to play, the title contest is by no means over.

The battle for fourth looks to be between Shawlands and Lochaber.  Shawlands are currently 10 points ahead, but they’re away at Bishopton this week, so may struggle to pick up any points.  Lochaber are at Scotstoun to play Hyndland, and they’ll fancy closing that gap.  With the points already in the bag, and Lochaber still with Bishopton to play, Shawlands are favourites for a fourth place finish.

As things stand, if Dalziel avoid relegation from National 3, this league will be cut to 8 Clubs next season.
