West League Update - West 3 - 18th February 2018

After all the excitement of the West 1 & 2 promotion and relegation battles, it's a bit of an anti-climax to report that there's only three teams challenging for the West 3 title.  And whilst there's no relegation from West 3, there's still a battle at the foot of the table as there's plenty of pride at stake.

Of the three challengers for the West 3 title, only Wigtownshire played at the weekend, winning with a comfortable 57 nil result over Moffat.  Bishopton had the weekend off, whilst the Glasgow Uni Medics home game against Lanark was postponed (anyone know the reason why?).

West League Update - West 2 - 18th February 2018

There can't be many competitions across the world of sport as competitive as West 2.  Paisley losing away at Cumnock on Saturday means we now have a top 5 within 6 points of each other, whilst at the foot of the table, we have four teams competing for two relegation spots - that's 9 Clubs from 12 still actively involved in the hunt.

What a difference a couple of weeks makes.  At the start of February, Paisley were 8 points clear of second, but defeats to their two nearest rivals puts them on the same points as Lenzie and only one ahead of Cumnock.  Paisley have a game in hand on Lenzie, but Cumnock have a game in hand on Paisley.

Weekend TV Rugby Schedule - 16th February 2018

Plenty of TV rugby this weekend, so if you can't get to a game, then at least you can settle down and take in the best of Scottish rugby.

West League Update - West 1 - 18th February 2018

As we get down to the business end of the campaign so we're splitting our West League update into three, one for each of the West Region Leagues - we've just got too many scenarios to explore for one update.

In West 1, the number of unfulfilled games have piled up so the end of the campaign has started to slip - mathematically it could be done and dusted by mid April, but by the same token, Carrick and Garnock are scheduled to be playing into May.

Of the three main challengers, Carrick and Garnock have 9 games remaining whilst Glens have 10 - there's 7 points between these three.  East Kilbride in fourth are 13 behind Carrick in top spot and have only 8 games remaining.  However, they do have each of the top 3 to play at home, so they're still in with a shout, even if it is only very slim.

Work begins on the new £3.8m home for Clydebank Rugby Club

Work on a new £3.8 million community sports facility for Clydebank officially got under way last week.

There's Plenty of Competition - But What is the Health of the Grassroots Game?

We started off this weeks league update in pretty pretty much the same fashion as we have done over the past few weeks.  Double check the scores we have on the fixture list and then review the SRU league tables and admire how many Clubs are still actively involved in the three Championship races as well as the wider promotion and relegation battles.

Having a quick flick through our records and we're seeing probably the most competitive set of West Region leagues we've had over the past decade.  We're willing to guess as well that if we had records going back further, that they're the most competitive set of West Region leagues ever.

With plenty of competition at the top and bottom of each league, we should be looking at a great deal of interest in grassroots Club games.

However, as we dug into the reasons for some of the games being off at the weekend we were again reminded that all is not well with grassroots rugby in West Region.

West Region Round-up - 10th February 2018

The West Region fixture backlog grew a little bigger at the weekend with only one of six West 1 games being played, however the drama of the West Leagues continues to build. West 1: Most of the West 1 postponements were down to the overnight rain, but the Glens v Helensburgh game was lost as Helensburgh couldn't raise a team. The one game that did take place saw East Kilbride win 58-3 at home to Greenock.

West Results (Male) - 10 February 2018

A full set of fixtures scheduled this Saturday across the West Region Leagues.

Currently each league realistically has three Clubs contesting the Championship, whilst there's plenty of others involved in each of the relegation battles - wins are crucial, but so too are bonus points.
